DZINE Gallery: Exhibition & Opening Reception Party – 3/25/16 (6pm)

#portrait

DZINE Gallery is pleased to present the opening of #portrait, our third group exhibition. The portrait has long been used as a vehicle for allegory, an expression of power and propaganda, and as advancing cultural aesthetic ideals and gender norms. How do people present themselves to the world? How does the artist or photographer approach the portrait to reveal the essence or inner psychology of a subject, or their own political, social, spiritual or aesthetic concerns? The nine artists in this exhibition confront these questions, exploring the contemporary portrait in various media, including painting, tintypes, photography, staged narrative and video.

DZINE welcomes San Francisco based designer Chris Baisa as our featured designer for the exhibition, inaugurating our representation of Delinear, his line of modern, handcrafted textiles, in our showroom.

Lucky Rapp Slate Gallery minial

Slate ‘minimal’ – 3/4/16 (Reception & Exhibition)

While Oakland’s SLATE contemporary gallery may be best known for colorful abstract expressionism, digital exploration, and energetic cityscapes, there comes a time now and again when one must take a deep inhale and an even longer exhale. SLATE’s minimal exhibition, on view from March 4th through April 16th, is an expression of an expansive sense of time and space, where time slows down and space opens up. It is seductively peaceful and calming and, yet, incredibly challenging. It is challenging precisely because we are so used to the constant onslaught of stimulating images that we are ill-equipped to simply stand in front of a white picture and wait to see what emerges. Part of the problem is our society’s increasing emphasis on digital and graphic displays: if an artwork does not grab one’s attention in five seconds while scrolling by as a 1-inch 72 dpi thumbnail, it has no power to navigate the media-powered currents of contemporary art. Hence, today’s art is increasingly reduced to the equivalent of sound bytes: short, snappy, and quickly understood.

minimal goes against this trend, featuring work that is mainly colorless and that does not translate to reproductive media. These pieces present shifts in tone that are so subtle that they can only be seen, much less appreciated, in person by standing in front of the art object. It is only from this vantage point that a viewer can appreciate the layering of white and off-white papers collaged onto Silvia Poloto’s mixed-media panels, or notice the shadows cast by Jane Grimm’s porcelain forms. It is only with time and attention that viewers will be rewarded with the etherial and yet structured floating forms in Edythe Bresnahan’s oil paintings, discover the message buried under the surface in Lucky Rapp’s white acrylic and resin wall work, or attempt to follow the figures in Tressa Pack’s photographic series Wanderers in a Sea of Fog.

DZINE Gallery – Pattern Language

DZINE Gallery
128 Utah Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

EXHIBITION
September 18, 2015 – March 18, 2016

DZINE Gallery’s second exhibition, curated by Philip Bewley, features the work of 15 women artists from the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and London employing a variety of media including paper cut process drawings, aquatints, hand blocked textiles, mixed media, painting, letterpress monotype, gilded glass, wool relief sculpture, photography, art couture
and video art.

The title of the exhibition, “Pattern Language,” is a term that has multiple definitions found in both design practice and in theoretical computer science. The artists in this exhibition incorporate and expand on these ideas in work that encompasses patterns found in nature and human behavior; with shape, media, text and even individual letters deconstructed to create
new patterns and meanings.

“Love patterns, hate repetition,” says artist Elvira M. Dayel, whose intricate and exacting panels, which she describes as “hand-cut paper process drawings,” are specially commissioned for this exhibition. “Commissioning new works from artists is an important part of our program,” shares DZINE curator Philip Bewley. “There are a number of artists in this exhibition who were already exploring original ideas in the incorporation of patterns and text in their work. The expansive spaces of the DZINE Gallery allow these artists to experiment and create new works that fulfill their own personal artistic vision.”
